Local Saint John company produces branded face masks for UNB Saint John students

The University of New Brunswick Saint John campus has enlisted the help of local business The Estey Group to provide students with UNB-branded community face masks for fall 2020.

With non-medical masks now a requirement on campus, students will each be given their own UNB-branded face mask when they return for the start of the semester.

“When the decision was made to provide students returning to campus with branded UNB facemasks, it was important to us to find a local company who could supply these,” says Dr. Petra Hauf, vice-president Saint John. “COVID-19 has had an impact on Saint John businesses so we were delighted to be able to purchase the masks locally and support the city’s business community.”

Family-owned and operated since 1866, The Estey Group has been serving the business region for over five generations and, throughout COVID-19, has kept local businesses stocked with safety supplies and personal protective equipment.

UNB’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has also purchased a number of the branded masks for inclusion in Orientation Week packages, which will be given to first-year students when they arrive on campus.

“Providing and funding masks for our new students is an important part of our return to classes in the fall as we think it will contribute to keeping students safe while on campus,” says Patrick Hickey, president of the SRC.

“The masks look great and the feedback from staff and faculty so far has been very positive,” adds Dr. Hauf. “I hope students will be just as happy with them once they receive their own ahead of the fall semester.”

Students returning to campus will each receive a complimentary UNB branded mask, while other campus users have the option of purchasing a mask, with 50% of the purchase price going toward UNB student bursaries.
