FREDERICTON – The Fredericton International Airport is pleased to announce that Chess Piece Patisserie & Café will be the food service provider in the new, expanded terminal when it opens in 2021.
Chess Piece currently operates two locations in downtown Fredericton, and is well-known for their coffee, decadent desserts, and made-from-scratch lunch selections. The new airport location will feature all of these along with quick-serve and family-friendly items for travellers on the go as well as a gift shop featuring items made by local artisans.
“Chess Piece is a great local company with a reputation for excellence, and we look forward to welcoming Patti and her team to the YFC family,” says Johanne Gallant, President and CEO of the Fredericton International Airport Authority.
“We’re excited and proud to launch our YFC location, and we look forward to bringing our unique products to local travellers and visitors,“ says Patti Hollenberg, co-owner of Chess Piece Patisserie & Café.
The new terminal is expected to be complete in Spring 2021. When it is complete, it will feature food service inside the departures lounge for travellers waiting to board aircraft, as well as a café in the arrivals area which will be accessible to travellers and the public.
“We would also like to thank the owners and employees of The Chef Group, who have provided service here at the Fredericton International Airport for many years and have agreed to continue operating until the construction project is complete,” Ms. Gallant says.
The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) is a dynamic, progressive, and growing airport. In 2019, we welcomed over 427,000 passengers and launched an ambitious terminal expansion project to expand and modernize the airport. With direct daily service to the major hubs of Toronto (Pearson and Billy Bishop), Montreal, Ottawa, and Halifax, along with seasonal service to the popular sun destinations Cancun, Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria, and Punta Cana YFC is Fredericton’s connection to the world. The Fredericton International Airport Authority is a not-for-profit organization that manages the airport on behalf of the community.
Construction began in 2019 on a two-year, $32-million terminal expansion and renovation for the Fredericton International Airport. The construction project will create 572 FTE (full-time equivalent) jobs in addition to the 662 FTE jobs that the airport’s ongoing operation supports annually.
When complete, the new terminal will be 50% larger, more comfortable, and be a better ambassador for our vibrant capital region. Some of the specific benefits to travellers when the project is complete include:
- Improved flow of passengers through the airport.
- Permanent, more efficient installation of security screening lines.
- Enhanced food service
- Departures area will be larger and more comfortable.
